What it does
3DCoat combines voxel and polygon modelling with retopology, UV tools, painting and rendering. Its feature material also documents node-based materials and procedural sculpting patterns.
3DCoat covers the path from a voxel sculpt to a textured model: sculpt or import a form, rebuild its topology, lay out UVs, paint PBR materials and render the result. Sculpting can switch between voxels and dynamically tessellated polygons. Manual and automatic retopology provide routes to a more structured mesh.
Its GPU node system creates editable materials, masks and procedural patterns. Materials can be previewed on a sculpt before retopology or UV work, while transform controls position and scale the patterns in the viewport. Other recent additions include GLB export and LWO3 import.
A 30-day trial is followed by an ongoing, non-commercial Learning mode. That mode saves .3b projects with up to 20 sculpt objects and 10 layers, and watermarks renders. Free OBJ export is limited to 20,000 triangles from Sculpt or 4,000 from the other modelling rooms; texture exports above 512 × 512 carry watermarks. Paid licensing includes permanent licences with 12 months of updates, subscriptions and rent-to-own options.
Strengths
- Voxel and polygon sculpting connect to retopology, UV editing and painting.
- Procedural materials can be previewed before retopology and UV mapping.
- Learning mode remains available after the trial.
Watch out for
- Learning mode is non-commercial and limits objects, layers and exports.
- Permanent licences include a finite initial update period.
Best for
- Organic and hard-surface asset artists
- Artists learning a complete sculpt-to-texture workflow
