What it does
CATIA is Dassault Systèmes' design and engineering family. Design & Styling connects sketch integration, subdivision modelling, surface refinement and visual evaluation through distinct applications and roles. The CATIA-based PLM Express Design Engineering packages use annual per-user subscriptions.
CATIA's Creative Design tools cover early shape exploration: integrate sketches, sculpt subdivision surfaces and build parametric designs with algorithms. A virtual human can provide a scale reference, while real-time visualisation and rendering help evaluate a concept's appearance. Surface Refinement is a separate discipline for developing Class-A surfaces.
Imagine & Shape focuses on curves, subdivision surfaces and topology changes. Its official training path also covers operations using Generative Shape Design tools. The R2025x course requires 3DSwymer, Collaborative Industry Innovator and Creative Designer roles, plus familiarity with mechanical and shape-design fundamentals. A course's related-role list does not mean every listed application is included in one purchase.
Current PLM Express Design Engineering subscriptions are billed yearly per user.

Those engineering packages should not be treated as interchangeable with the creative-design role requirements. The vendor’s comparison table also includes browser-based viewing and geometric analysis, alongside the wider portfolio's desktop applications.
For supported Windows installations, Dassault lists Windows 11 25H2 from 3DEXPERIENCE R2024x and V5-6R2024 onward. Hardware-specific support depends on a certified configuration. The relevant release, roles and surface tools therefore matter when matching CATIA to an existing design team.
