What it does

Accessibility Insights for Web is a browser extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge that helps developers check accessibility in web applications and sites. FastPass combines automated checks with an assisted tab-stop test for keyboard navigation. The extension also offers a broader assessment that includes manual and assisted requirements. Its results can surface issues, but a passing automated scan does not establish that a page meets every accessibility guideline.

Use FastPass before a full assessment

Install the extension in Chrome or Microsoft Edge and navigate to a page in the web application you want to review. Launch Accessibility Insights for Web from the extension toolbar, then run FastPass. The automated part checks common requirements; the tab-stop portion guides you through keyboard navigation and helps reveal problems such as missing stops or a keyboard trap. The workflow also marks findings that need a human decision.

For deeper coverage, use the Assessment workflow and complete its assisted and manual tests. Automated checks only cover part of WCAG, and some checks inspect visible content only. If a menu, dialog, or combo-box options are hidden until interaction, expose that content and test the relevant state rather than relying on a scan of the initial page alone.

This is a focused accessibility testing extension, not an automatic certification service. The project is free and its web extension is MIT-licensed. The separate Accessibility Insights for Windows product is outside this listing.

Strengths

  • FastPass combines automated accessibility checks with an assisted keyboard tab-stop review.
  • The broader Assessment workflow includes manual and assisted checks beyond automated scanning.
  • The extension is available for Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Watch out for

  • Automated checks cover only part of WCAG; human testing is needed for many accessibility issues.
  • Some automated checks examine visible content only, so hidden menus, dialogs, and other states must be exposed and checked separately.

Best for

  • Developers checking keyboard access and common accessibility issues while building a website
  • Teams that need a guided first pass before a broader manual WCAG assessment
  • Reviewing web pages interactively in Chrome or Microsoft Edge
