What it does
Adobe Substance 3D Designer builds textures, materials and filters from connected nodes. Changing an input can update several related texture maps together. Authors can expose selected controls so other artists adjust a material without editing its underlying graph. Designer comes with a paid Substance 3D Texturing or Collection subscription, separate from ordinary Creative Cloud plans.
A Designer graph can generate related outputs such as base colour, normal and roughness maps. The editable source package is SBS. A published SBSAR archive keeps the chosen parameters available but locks the graph itself, making it suitable for supported Substance integrations.
To expose one control, find it under Specific Parameters in the Properties panel. Open its options and choose Expose as new graph input, set an identifier and a readable label, then confirm. In the graph's Input Parameters section, you can set defaults, minimum and maximum values and whether those limits are enforced. Preview mode shows how the controls will behave outside Designer.
Not every control can be exposed. Gradient ramps, curve editors, fonts and level histograms need widgets that user-created parameters do not support. Static parameters are also hidden in published SBSAR assets, so previewing the exposed controls is part of preparing a usable material.
Designer is included in Substance 3D Texturing and Collection plans. Adobe advertises the US individual Collection subscription at US$59.99/month, with a 30-day trial available. Substance subscriptions are separate from ordinary Creative Cloud app plans. Designer also creates procedural environment lighting and MDL materials through its dedicated shader graph.
Strengths
- One connected change can update multiple texture outputs.
- APIs allow custom plugins, utility graphs and production tools.
Watch out for
- Published SBSAR files keep their underlying node graphs locked.
- Some parameter types cannot become exposed user controls.
Best for
- Material artists building reusable texture systems
- Technical artists creating adjustable materials for other applications
