What it does

Adobe Substance 3D Modeler combines freeform clay sculpting with editable primitive shapes. Artists can switch between desktop and virtual reality while building objects or scenes. Export controls then turn those creations into meshes or volumes for other applications. The paid Substance 3D Collection subscription includes Modeler.

The desktop Clay workflow adds and removes material like a sculpting tool. Primitives use live shape-combination operations instead: right-click the scene, choose Add primitive, select a shape and adjust it in the Palette. Add another intersecting shape and change its combine mode. Primitive order in the Outliner affects the result, so it is part of the model's construction.

Export a sculpt

  1. Switch to desktop mode, then open Export from the top bar or press Ctrl + Shift + E.
  2. Leave everything deselected for the whole scene, or select the objects to export.
  3. Set format, unit scale, up axis and topology in Export Settings. If using a preset, click Apply preset after selecting it.
  4. Open Project assets, choose Export full scene or Export selected, and select a destination.

Formats include FBX, OBJ, glTF/GLB, USD variants, STL and VDB. Triangle and quad rebuilding aim for a target polygon count rather than guaranteeing it; UV-mapped triangles can add automatic texture coordinates. Some settings depend on the output format.

Modeler is Windows-only. The US Substance 3D Collection offer includes it at US$59.99 per month. Export is unavailable inside VR, even though sculpting can move between VR and desktop.

Strengths

  • Symmetry and repetition tools help construct repeated forms.
  • Exports can preserve existing instances or turn matching copies into instances.

Watch out for

  • The application requires Windows.
  • Exporting a scene requires leaving VR for desktop mode.

Best for

  • Artists developing forms through digital clay or combined primitives
  • Sculptors handing models to texturing, rendering or printing software
