What it does

Adobe Substance 3D Painter paints materials directly on 3D meshes. It records editable strokes, supports smart masks and materials, and exports textures through configurable presets.

Substance 3D Painter develops the surface of an existing mesh through layered painting, smart materials and masks. Dynamic brushes, projection tools and Photoshop brush presets handle direct painting; material channels cover effects such as clear coat, anisotropy and subsurface scattering. Recorded strokes can be recomputed after edits or a resolution change.

Create a project from a mesh and import its baked maps, then build the material in the viewport. Supported inputs include FBX, OBJ, Alembic, glTF and USD-family files. File > Export Textures produces bitmap maps, with custom presets controlling the output for a renderer or game engine. UDIM painting, camera import and Python scripting support more technical asset pipelines.

Painter is included in Adobe's Substance 3D Texturing and Collection subscriptions. The standard 30-day trial converts to paid access unless cancelled. Eligible higher-education students and teachers can obtain a renewable 12-month licence for personal learning; work made under it cannot be sold or used commercially, and the paid asset library is excluded.

Strengths

  • Recorded paint strokes can be recomputed after edits and resolution changes.
  • Custom export presets adapt texture channels to a production pipeline.
  • UDIMs, camera import and Python scripting support complex assets.

Watch out for

  • The standard trial starts paid billing unless cancelled.
  • The free education licence restricts work to personal and educational use.

Best for

  • Game and VFX artists texturing finished meshes
  • Artists building layered PBR materials
