What it does
Adobe Substance 3D Stager assembles existing 3D assets into scenes for product imagery and visual presentations. It combines material and lighting tools with cameras, real-time previews and ray tracing. Collision-aware transforms help place objects in contact while composing a scene. Stager is part of the paid Substance 3D Collection, and Adobe offers a 30-day trial.
Collision needs two settings: enable Collision in the transform tool options, then turn it on for each participating object in Properties > Object > Collision. Move or rotate the objects to position them; the global switch alone does not make every object participate.
Choose the collider shape to match the job. Convex follows an object's outer bounds, Concave includes cavities, and Surface handles thin sheets of geometry. Higher collider quality uses more processing power. Collision and snapping cannot be enabled together, and objects already intersecting ignore each other for that transformation.
For rendering, the viewport control bar switches between real-time display and ray tracing. Render Settings controls quality, displacement and denoising. Physical lights can be added manually, or the environment lighting editor can shape the scene's overall illumination. Stager accepts formats including CAD, USD and glTF, and can receive a Painter project directly.
US Collection pricing starts at US$59.99/month for individuals. The team offer is US$119.99 per licence per month on an annual plan billed monthly. Stager is included in Collection, while the Texturing plan lists Painter, Sampler and Designer. Adobe offers a 30-day Substance trial.
Strengths
- Environment lighting and separately placed physical lights can be used in the same scene.
- A Painter project can be sent directly to Stager.
Watch out for
- Collision and snapping cannot operate together.
- More precise colliders demand additional processing.
Best for
- Product artists composing scenes from existing 3D assets
- Designers placing materials and graphics in rendered presentations
