What it does

albo is a Mexican electronic-money account for transfers, bills and card purchases. Its app tracks spending and subscriptions and lets customers divide money into Espacios. The personal account has no opening or regular account fee, but transfer allowances, inactivity and replacement-card charges apply.

Control each card separately

Open Tarjeta, select Física or Virtual, then move the Bloquear tarjeta slider. The same control turns that particular card back on. For example, you can pause the physical card while deciding whether it has been misplaced, without changing the virtual card's setting.

What the personal account costs

Opening and holding the account, the first card's delivery, statements, bill payments and Espacios are free. Transfers between albo users are also free. External transfers through Mexico's SPEI system cost MXN 10 plus VAT from the 32nd transfer in a month.

After three consecutive months with no account activity, an inactivity charge of MXN 50 plus VAT starts the following month and continues monthly until the account is used or closed. An additional or replacement card costs MXN 200 plus VAT. Cash shops and ATMs can charge their own fees.

Opening an account

Download the app and start registration. Supply your personal details, email, phone number, current official identification and a selfie, then sign the account contract digitally. The help guide lists an INE voter ID or passport; albo's main page also lists a migration identity document. Applicants must be adults. After the first deposit, you can request the physical card from the app.

albo identifies itself as an electronic payment funds institution. It states that customer funds are not guaranteed by a government authority and that electronic-money balances do not earn interest. That distinction matters if you are looking for an interest-bearing bank savings account.
