What it does
Amaziograph is a raster drawing app for mandalas, tessellations and repeating patterns. Symmetry copies each drawn mark, while layers and palette mixing support the artwork.
On iPad, select a symmetry and draw a motif, then adjust the pins to change the repeat. Tile presets can shift rows by a half or a third, producing a brick-like arrangement. Dragging colours between palette cells mixes new shades; RGB and HSV controls offer numerical choices.
Export a repeat or an editable drawing
Crop to tile becomes available when the selected symmetry and layer size can produce a repeat. Rotational and mandala arrangements do not necessarily yield a tile. PNG retains transparency but flattens layers; Amaziograph format preserves them, and iPad also offers layered PSD.
The artwork is raster-based, so plan the canvas resolution before drawing fine lines. Imported images can serve as references or backgrounds, but symmetry is not applied to them. Android and Windows have fewer symmetry and brush features than iPad. Back up editable files before removing the app, since its local drawings are removed with it.
Strengths
- Symmetry pins and tile presets give control over a repeating layout
- Native files retain layers for later drawing
Watch out for
- Imported images cannot be repeated through the symmetry system
- Android and Windows omit several iPad tools and PSD export
Best for
- Hand-drawn mandalas and repeat patterns for print
