What it does

Amtrak’s official passenger site connects route discovery with train reservations and travel information. Its route index covers the United States and selected Canadian connections, alongside regional browsing, rail passes and onboard accommodation information.

Open the route map before trying to force a flight-style city pair into a rail search. The regional index and station-or-route lookup help establish which service reaches the places you want. Named routes, such as the California Zephyr or Cascades, have their own geographic paths.

For a longer journey, compare the seating and private-room information while deciding the route. Baggage and station information belong in that decision too, especially if the overnight part is central to the holiday. The site separately presents USA and California rail passes and multi-ride products. Investigate those against the journeys you actually intend to make rather than assuming a pass is the right starting point for every rail trip.

Strengths

  • Combines a regional route index with station and route lookup
  • Provides separate seating, private-room and rail-pass information

Best for

  • Planning an independent US rail journey
