What it does

Approximate Type distributes original retail typefaces including Reply, Canopy, Skanner and Medley. It offers desktop and web files, custom design and modifications by commission.

Approximate Type's trial package includes every style, glyph, OpenType feature and kerning pair, along with some unreleased designs. Enter your name and email, accept the trial agreement and choose Download Trials. These files can be used for sketches, mockups, presentations and noncommercial school projects; commercial use needs permission and licensing.

To buy, open Purchase, select styles, choose the licence type and the benefiting company's employee count, then select Add fonts and complete Stripe checkout. The confirmed order arrives by email with the font files and invoice. Purchases have a one-time fee in euros and grant perpetual use within the agreement. An agency can pay the invoice, but its client must be named as the licence owner.

For a logotype, you may convert the lettering to outlines and adjust those shapes. Editing and exporting a modified font file is prohibited. Family PDF specimens provide character and language coverage, and the FAQ cautions that Microsoft Office compatibility is not guaranteed. Free licences for qualifying nonprofit projects addressing social injustice are available by enquiry.

Strengths

  • Trials include full glyph and feature coverage for evaluation.
  • The FAQ explains ownership when a designer purchases for a client.

Watch out for

  • Font-file modifications are prohibited, even though outlined logotype lettering can be adjusted.
  • The FAQ does not guarantee Microsoft Office compatibility.

Best for

  • Client identity exploration
  • Layouts needing complete trial character coverage
