What it does

GNOME Web, also called Epiphany, is the GNOME desktop browser with private-window and website-data controls documented in its user help.

GNOME Web fits a desktop workflow where you want the browser to behave like the rest of GNOME. Its help describes opening an Incognito Window for a session that does not reuse existing site logins or retain the same local browsing information. A borrowed computer or a separate webmail session is the example it gives.

The help also states that incognito mode does not stop sites tracking activity. Use it for local session separation, and inspect the documented cookie and stored-data settings when that is the actual privacy task.

Strengths

  • GNOME desktop integration
  • Documented private-window and site-data controls

Watch out for

  • Its incognito mode does not stop website tracking

Best for

  • GNOME users managing separate local browsing sessions
