What it does

Arcticons is a free Android icon-pack project that replaces app icons with line artwork. Dark, Light, Material You and Day & Night variants suit different home-screen themes. A launcher that supports custom icon packs is required; the app code and icon artwork have separate open licences.

Choose a variant on the Arcticons site and follow its download route. In the app, Apply detects a compatible launcher and applies the pack. If a launcher does not support direct application, choose Arcticons from that launcher’s own settings.

Material You uses the phone’s color palette and generally requires Android 12 or later plus a supported launcher. Day & Night switches between light and dark versions automatically; the FAQ says this variant is unavailable on Google Play. Arcticons does not automatically generate replacements for missing app icons.

The project’s Android code uses GPLv3, while the artwork uses CC BY-SA 4.0. Those are different conditions when redistributing code or adapting icon files. Installing the pack for a home screen does not require building its source. Download options on the main site include F-Droid, GitHub and other distribution channels.

Strengths

  • Offers related light, dark and automatically switching variants.
  • Provides in-app application and a manual launcher-settings route.

Watch out for

  • Requires a launcher with custom icon-pack support.
  • Material You depends on Android and launcher compatibility.

Best for

  • Android users customizing a line-icon home screen
