What it does

The USDA Agricultural Research Service Image Gallery supplies photographs of crops, animals, food and scientific work. Images are free and public domain unless a record says otherwise.

Use a keyword for a particular crop or browse categories such as Field Research, Lab Research and Photo Illustrations. Clicking a category thumbnail opens its caption page. The Digital Assets section also includes scanning-electron-microscope images of mites, useful when an agricultural story needs a close view of a pest rather than a field scene.

The agency asks for credit to USDA Agricultural Research Service and the photographer when known. Its images may not suggest that ARS endorses a product, company or position. Check the individual record for exceptions to the gallery’s public-domain policy.

Strengths

  • Subject categories distinguish field work, laboratory research and illustration.
  • The collection includes microscopy as well as conventional photography.

Watch out for

  • Individual images can have exceptions to the general public-domain policy.

Best for

  • Agricultural publishers and science educators
  • Designers illustrating food research or crop production
