What it does

ArtCopy combines drawing challenges with mobile painting tools and collaborative canvases. A challenge supplies a written description for users to interpret before comparing their artwork.

ArtCopy’s challenge separates the description from the original image. Read the prompt, decide how its shapes and relationships should look, then draw your interpretation. Sharing it reveals how other people approached the same words. Draw n Switch adds a different exercise: participants take turns developing one canvas.

The sketchbook also supports work outside a challenge. Its layers have opacity, visibility and ordering controls; selections can be moved, resized or recoloured. Shapes have fill and border controls, and completed work can be exported as PNG. Pro adds further brushes, backgrounds and unlimited sketchbook slots to the free app through monthly or annual subscriptions.

Community submission rules affect how you make the work. AI-generated, assisted or enhanced artwork is prohibited, and submissions require a time-lapse showing the creation process. You retain ownership while granting ArtCopy the rights needed to operate and display the service. Contributing an original as challenge material also authorises description-based prompts and comparisons with other users’ interpretations.

Strengths

  • Written prompts encourage individual visual interpretations.
  • Layer and selection controls support a separate sketchbook workflow.
  • Turn-taking drawing offers a shared illustration exercise.

Watch out for

  • Community submissions exclude AI-generated and AI-assisted artwork.
  • Submission rules require process time-lapses.

Best for

  • Interpreting written art prompts
  • Collaborative drawing practice
