What it does

Artothek supplies museum and artwork images for agreed reproduction uses. Search accepts titles, artists, places and techniques, while registered clients can access high-resolution files and images of copyrighted works.

Combine terms such as an artist, museum and technique in the search box, then use the gear control to refine the result. The site’s own example combines Städel, etching and Degas. Search history is cleared when every Artothek window or tab is closed.

Apply for registration with company and contact details. Artothek approves access and emails the login information. Image fees are agreed in advance according to the medium, scope and duration of use; files are delivered through website downloads or by email.

The standard agreement permits one use unless another arrangement is made. Alterations need written consent, files must be deleted after use, and the photographer, institution and Artothek credit must be retained as supplied. Additional artist or personal rights remain a separate clearance responsibility.

Strengths

  • Search combines artwork names, holding locations and techniques.
  • Clients can receive image files through the website or by email.

Watch out for

  • Files must be deleted after the agreed use.
  • Search history disappears when all Artothek tabs and windows close.

Best for

  • Editors arranging licensed reproductions of museum artworks
