What it does

Art Resource licenses fine-art photographs from museums and archives for publishing, film, advertising and other professional reproductions. Staff art historians can help locate works that are difficult to identify or find in the online catalogue.

Add an image to the cart, open Cart at the top of the page and select the files to send to the research and permissions staff. Submitting this request is free. The licence price depends on the intended use, so include the publication type, print run and distribution area when asking for a quote.

Art Resource’s terms require an invoice authorising the use, even for layouts, and grant reproduction rights only after full payment. The supplied credit and image number must stay with the file. Digital files normally can be retained for sixty days, or until the date on the invoice; keeping them longer requires a written extension unless covered by the licence.

The museum galleries span collections such as the Carnegie Museum of Art, the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Museo del Prado. A request can also go beyond images already digitised in the catalogue.

Strengths

  • Staff art historians can research images beyond the online selection.
  • The cart sends a group of image requests to the permissions team without a request fee.

Watch out for

  • Image use requires written approval and full licence payment.
  • Standard file-retention terms do not permit an indefinite personal image archive.

Best for

  • Publishers and producers sourcing licensed artwork reproductions
