What it does
The Walters Art Museum’s online collection provides artwork images and records from cultures around the world. Eligible public-domain images and metadata use CC0, with free downloads directly from object pages.
Explore by category, date, medium, creator or place. Object pages can include several photographs, each with its own Download Image link and licence label. The Egyptian magic wand record, for example, offers two CC0 views alongside its accession number, exhibition history and conservation entries.
Images and text have different terms: eligible photographs and metadata use CC0, while longer descriptions use the GNU Free Documentation License. Loans, artist copyright and privacy restrictions can limit other works to small display images.
For a higher-resolution file, the museum’s request form asks for project details and the object’s accession number, title and artist. The Walters asks users to credit the museum.
Strengths
- Object pages connect multiple views with provenance, exhibition and conservation information.
- Eligible images have clear CC0 labels and direct downloads.
Watch out for
- Long descriptions and restricted works do not share the images’ general CC0 terms.
Best for
- Art publishers needing object history and image credits
- Designers sourcing reusable photographs of historical artworks
