What it does

Ashlar-Vellum provides desktop drafting, solid and surface modelling for designers and engineers on Windows and Mac. Its applications differ in how they preserve design relationships. Paid subscriptions and a registration-based trial provide access to the modelling tools.

Graphite handles 2D and 3D drafting; Cobalt adds dimensionally constrained and equation-driven modelling. Xenon provides associative modelling, while Argon uses a history-free approach. Cobalt combines wireframe, surfaces and solids, with a history tree and numerical fields for object parameters.

A 2008 bowl tutorial illustrates the shared Cobalt, Xenon and Argon solid tools. Start with a twelve-sided polygon, set its diameter, then extrude it with a distance and draft angle. Edge blends round the body. Two circles form an extruded ring base, which Union joins to the bowl. An inner drafted extrusion is then subtracted to create the hollow interior. The completed model is distinct from the separately added lighting and material used for its presentation.

Cobalt's exchange options include STEP, IGES, SAT, DXF, DWG and 3D PDF. Cobalt Solo costs US$695 for a one-year commercial single-user subscription or US$69.95 per month. Monthly billing begins with the first and last months paid together, US$139.90. Both subscriptions include major upgrades.

The full trial lasts two weeks after review of complete contact details; incomplete details receive a two-day code. Unregistered demo mode disables saving, printing and export. Trial software and files are restricted to evaluation, without commercial use.

Licence validation normally needs an internet connection at least every 30 days. A separately purchased physical licensing key is the alternative for disconnected work. Current Cobalt requirements list Windows 10/11 x64, macOS 12 through 15 and 26, and OpenGL 3.3 graphics.

Strengths

  • Separate applications offer different levels of modelling history and relationships.
  • Cobalt combines solid, surface and wireframe tools with equation-driven dimensions.
  • CAD exchange formats and 3D PDF support different handoffs.

Watch out for

  • Unregistered demo mode cannot save, print or export.
  • Commercial work cannot use files made with the trial licence.
  • Disconnected licensing needs a separate physical key.

Best for

  • Product designers choosing how much design history to retain
  • Windows or Mac teams exchanging solid and surface CAD models
