What it does

Jira gives teams a shared place to plan and track work using spaces, templates, boards, backlogs, and work items. Teams can start with Scrum, Kanban, or bug-tracking patterns, adjust the workflow to match their process, and use board, backlog, timeline, calendar, or summary views to follow progress. It suits teams that need both day-to-day task ownership and a structured way to coordinate delivery.

Start with a working shape

Create a space for a team or project, then choose a template that resembles its work. Atlassian's getting-started guide describes Scrum for sprint-based backlogs, Kanban for a continuous flow, and bug tracking for teams that prefer a list-oriented workflow. A template supplies work types, a workflow, and a board, so the team can begin with a usable structure rather than configuring every field first.

Set board columns to match the team's actual stages, then create a work item for a specific task, feature, or bug. Jira places it in the backlog or directly on the board depending on the space setup. As work progresses, move the item across columns; Scrum teams can organize work into sprints, while a Kanban team can keep the flow continuous. For an illustrative website launch, one space could hold the launch work, with items for copy, implementation, testing, and release moving through review stages.

The pricing page lists Free, Standard, Premium, and Enterprise plans. Free is available for up to 10 users and includes 2 GB of storage; larger teams or cross-project planning may need a paid tier. Company-managed spaces are administered by Jira admins, whereas team-managed spaces let a team manage its own setup. See Atlassian's getting-started guide and pricing details.
