What it does
Autodesk Arnold is a ray tracing renderer for artists working on characters, visual effects and scene lighting. It integrates with applications including Maya and 3ds Max, with tools for hair, skin, volumes and repeated objects. Its architecture also allows studios to create custom shaders. Batch rendering needs an Arnold licence, available by subscription; Maya and 3ds Max can render through their own interfaces without a separate Arnold licence.
Arnold can render with a computer's processor or graphics card. Interactive rendering lets artists inspect changes inside their 3D application, while instances can share geometry and still have different transformations or materials. Volumetric rendering covers effects such as fog, smoke and fire.
The licence needed for final output depends on how rendering starts. Maya and 3ds Max can produce unwatermarked renders in their user interfaces without a separate Arnold licence. Batch rendering needs one. Cinema 4D, Houdini and Katana also require an Arnold licence to remove the watermark from interactive previews.
Single-user subscriptions are offered monthly, yearly and for three years, with a 30-day trial. Network subscriptions come through resellers. Arnold > Licensing opens the licence manager in supported hosts, where users can sign in or connect to a licence server. Each render-farm node needs its own available licence.
Arnold supports Windows, macOS and Linux. A named subscription permits installation on three devices, but the named user can run it on only one at a time.
Strengths
- 3D motion blur accounts for shadows, volumes and indirect lighting.
- One machine licence does not limit the number of CPU cores or threads used.
Watch out for
- Watermark-free batch rendering requires Arnold licensing even when the host's interactive rendering does not.
- A render farm needs enough licences for its rendering nodes.
Best for
- Lighting artists working inside supported 3D applications
- Studios building custom rendering tools and shaders
