What it does

Autodesk Inventor is Windows mechanical CAD for parametric, direct and rules-based modelling. It combines part and assembly design with drawings, sheet-metal tools and manufacturing annotations. Subscriptions are offered monthly, annually or for three years, with Flex tokens for occasional use.

In a part with an existing solid, start with a closed sketch region and open 3D Model > Create > Extrude. Select the profile, choose a starting face or plane in From, then set the direction and distance. Use Join to add material or Cut to remove it, select the participating body, inspect the preview and confirm with OK. New Solid instead creates a separate body within the part.

Symmetric extrusion places half of Distance A on each side of the sketch plane. Asymmetric accepts different distances in the two directions. Through All passes through the features in its direction but cannot use Join. To Next needs a face or body that completely intersects the profile and is unavailable for base features or assembly extrusions. In a multi-body part, no preview appears until a participating solid or New Solid is selected.

Other design controls include iLogic configurations and model states for different manufacturing or simplified representations in one file. Assembly interference checks and associated drawing views support the wider mechanical workflow.

Access uses monthly, annual or three-year subscriptions, with Flex tokens for occasional use. A named subscriber can install on three computers but use one at a time. Inventor runs on Windows.

Strengths

  • Extrusion direction, extent and Boolean operation are separate controls.
  • Model states retain different manufacturing or simplified representations within one file.

Watch out for

  • Through All cannot be used with Join, and To Next has intersection and feature-type limits.
  • A named subscription permits only one active computer at a time.

Best for

  • Mechanical parts with controlled additions and cutouts
  • Configurable assemblies and their manufacturing drawings
