What it does

Autotracer is a free browser service for converting bitmap artwork into vector files. Its controls reduce colours, smooth outlines and remove small isolated marks.

Despeckling can tidy a scan, but a small dot may be intentional. Autotracer makes that tradeoff visible: removing tiny regions produces a cleaner, less detailed trace.

Supply a file or image URL within the 6 MB upload and 5,000 by 5,000 pixel limits. Choose a reduced palette, adjust smoothing, and decide whether to ignore a white background. Compare fine marks and gaps after conversion before taking the result into a drawing editor.

SVG, PDF, AI and EPS are among the export choices. DXF is also offered, specifically without splines. The service uses the AutoTrace library with image preprocessing, and its own guidance says further editing is usually needed. It is a practical first pass for simple line art or a scanned mark, with no registration or email requirement.

Strengths

  • Palette reduction and smoothing expose useful tracing decisions.
  • A white background can be omitted from the vector result.
  • No account is required.

Watch out for

  • Uploads are limited to 6 MB and 5,000 by 5,000 pixels.
  • DXF output does not include splines.
  • Traces commonly need further editing.

Best for

  • Occasional conversion of scanned line art
  • Preparing bitmap marks for vector editing
