What it does
Avondale Type Co. sells commercial fonts and provides custom typefaces, wordmarks, lettering and font mastering. Its catalog includes monospaced, script and display designs, with trial files for mockups and proposals.
The family pages are more useful than the short catalog labels for judging range. ATC Duel, for example, shows specimens from Extra Condensed to Wide, while the catalog also offers the monospaced ATC Harris and sign-painter-style ATC Oneshot. Open the family’s PDF Specimen or Free Trial Font link before choosing Buying Options.
For Duel, those options distinguish desktop users, monthly web traffic, app users and logo use. The logo option follows the client’s employee count and does not replace desktop coverage. Count everyone who needs to install the files, including relevant developers and printers; the commercial terms require seat coverage for those users. Larger print runs and uses outside the selectors need a custom agreement.
The trial library asks for an email address and acceptance of the trial terms. It contains basic letters, numbers and punctuation but omits ligature substitutions and contextual alternates. Use it to assess draft layouts; commercial or public-facing work requires the retail licence.
Strengths
- Family specimens show width and style differences beyond the catalog summaries.
- Custom lettering, wordmarks and mastering are available alongside retail fonts.
Watch out for
- Trial files omit characters and substitution features present in the retail fonts.
- Production collaborators need seat coverage, and logo use has a separate selector.
Best for
- Identity projects combining retail type and custom lettering
- Design teams planning font handoffs to production partners
