What it does
Amazon EC2 provides resizable virtual-server capacity. Its first-instance workflow selects a region and Amazon Machine Image, chooses an instance type, creates or selects a key pair, reviews network and security-group rules, and launches the VM with a root EBS volume. From there, the operator connects using the guest operating system's supported method and terminates or stops the instance when it is no longer needed.
EC2 is a flexible infrastructure service for teams that need to choose the host image, compute family, storage, and network controls rather than deploy only into a managed application runtime. The official tutorial makes the setup sequence concrete: select an AMI and size, configure a key pair and security group, launch, connect, and clean up. On-Demand capacity is billed while the instance runs, so leaving a test VM idle in the running state is not a cost-saving substitute for stopping or terminating it.
Strengths
- The guided launch flow exposes region, OS image, instance type, key pair, network rules, and root storage choices.
- The service offers multiple purchasing approaches, including On-Demand instances without a long-term commitment.
- The getting-started guide includes connection and cleanup steps as well as launch instructions.
Watch out for
- The user is responsible for selecting secure network rules; the guide warns that allowing SSH or RDP from all IP addresses is unsafe for production.
- An instance in the running state continues to incur usage charges, including when it is idle.
Best for
- Hosting applications that need control over VM images, compute sizing, and network configuration.
- Development and test servers that can be created and removed as needed.
