What it does

Amazon Simple Email Service, usually called Amazon SES, sends transactional and marketing email through an API or SMTP and supports inbound email processing. Pricing is usage-based, with plan choices, optional capabilities and charges that depend on the selected workload.

Production access is a separate step from being able to open an SES account. New accounts begin in a sandbox for each AWS Region. There, sending is restricted to verified recipients or the mailbox simulator, with a maximum of 200 messages per 24 hours and one message per second. A successful setup in one Region therefore does not establish production access in another.

In the SES console, open Account dashboard, then View Get set up page and Request production access. The form asks for the type of mail, a website URL and confirmation that bounce and complaint handling is in place. After approval, recipient verification is no longer generally required, but sender identities still must be verified. AWS reviews the request and can ask for additional information.

SES offers usage-based à-la-carte billing without minimum fees, as well as bundled plans. New accounts and qualifying inactive account/Region combinations default to Essentials. Attachment data and optional services can add charges.

Plan Billing structure Main distinction
Essentials Usage charges Sending plus deliverability monitoring
Pro Usage charges and a monthly account/Region fee Managed dedicated infrastructure and validation
Enterprise Usage charges and a monthly account/Region fee Broader multi-region and workload-separation features

Strengths

  • API and SMTP interfaces support application-based email delivery
  • Region-specific setup makes the deployment boundary explicit

Watch out for

  • New accounts must leave the sandbox before general recipient sending
  • Email volume is only one part of a configuration-dependent bill

Best for

  • AWS-based application teams able to manage identities, event handling and regional setup
