What it does

BAL Foundry publishes retail and bespoke typefaces, including BAL Grotesk, Crows, Thunder and Abys Mono. Family pages include specimens, glyph coverage and technical details.

Crows is a useful first stop for BAL's experimental side. Its regular, rotated and twisted monospaced serif styles share a structure, with stencil versions extending the set. Open Typing.. to adjust size, leading and tracking, then use the glyphset and OpenType features to inspect alternatives. Details lists the actual file formats, character set and language coverage; Crows supplies OTF, TTF, WOFF and WOFF2 with Latin Extended support.

Buying Options separates individual styles, family packages and the larger collection. Trials are limited-character OTF files for evaluation and pitches. Any operational or published use needs a paid licence.

Commercial licences are perpetual within the selected scope and the named client's company-size tier. That count includes regular collaborators who are integrated into the organization. Growth beyond the tier requires an upgrade, and a licence for one company does not extend automatically to its affiliates. Desktop, web and app use are separate choices, with additional coverage for uses such as social media and wordmarks.

Strengths

  • Detailed family pages connect visual specimens with technical coverage.
  • Crows supplies related regular, distorted and stencil treatments.

Watch out for

  • Company growth beyond the licensed tier requires an upgrade.
  • A license covers the named legal entity rather than every related company.

Best for

  • Expressive editorial systems
  • Brand teams comparing conventional and experimental typography
