What it does

Bank of America provides mobile and browser access to account activity, statements and bill payments. Its digital tools include due-date reminders, recurring bill schedules and several deposit channels. SafeBalance offers a checking account without paper check writing, with a monthly fee that qualifying customers can avoid.

Choose a date for a one-time or recurring bill payment, then use a reminder to follow the obligation before it is due. In Online Banking, open Pay & Transfers → Bill Pay, accept the service terms and add billers using details from your bills. Eligible billers can send eBills directly into this area. You can pay the full bill, a minimum payment or another chosen amount.

Bill Pay itself has no fee. Bank of America recommends allowing at least five business days before a bill’s due date. Some billers receive a mailed check rather than an electronic payment, which affects when money leaves the account.

SafeBalance costs and access

The standard Advantage SafeBalance account requires at least US$25 to open and costs US$4.95 monthly. That fee is waived with a minimum daily balance of US$500, an owner under 25, or an owner enrolled in BofA Rewards at Preferred Plus or higher. It has no bank overdraft item fees, but does not support writing personal checks. Out-of-network ATM use has separate charges.

People aged 16 or older can own the standard account; younger applicants need an adult co-owner. Opening with a child under 13 requires a financial-center appointment. An online application asks for a Social Security number, residential and email addresses, and funding details. If those details are unavailable, the bank offers an appointment route.

Depositing money has separate channels: mobile check deposit, direct deposit and supported ATMs. Account differences matter: SafeBalance for Family Banking does not include direct deposit or Zelle, unlike standard SafeBalance. Statement delivery can also be changed: use Menu → Go Paperless in the app or Profile & Settings → Paperless settings online.

Strengths

  • eBills support due-date reminders and a choice of payment amount.
  • Paperless delivery settings can be changed through either digital channel.
  • SafeBalance does not charge bank overdraft item fees.

Watch out for

  • SafeBalance does not support writing personal checks.
  • The Family Banking version excludes direct deposit and Zelle.

Best for

  • US customers coordinating regular bills and account statements
  • Eligible younger customers seeking SafeBalance’s monthly-fee waiver
