What it does

ZA Bank offers Hong Kong mobile accounts for savings, card payments and transfers. Local Faster Payment System payments sit alongside saved payees, while Payment Connect, Wise and SWIFT provide different international transfer routes.

Open Transfer → Frequent Payee to reuse a recipient. FPS can receive Hong Kong dollars and Chinese yuan using a registered mobile number, and local FPS transfers are free. The app also lets you lock a ZA Card when a payment looks unfamiliar.

For the Hong Kong resident application, applicants must be at least 18, hold an original Hong Kong identity card, have a Hong Kong residential address and use a valid local mobile number that receives calls and texts. Select the identity-card account route, enter your mobile number and email, scan the card, complete facial verification and supply the requested personal and tax details before creating your login. ZA also offers a separate visitor application route, with different eligibility.

Account and transfer costs

There is no account-maintenance fee or opening-deposit requirement. Overseas payments need more care than local FPS: the route, currency and any other banks involved affect the cost.

ZA's notice effective 1 November 2026 introduces a HKD 70 fee per outward SWIFT remittance, replacing the bank's own fee waiver. Other banks' handling charges can also apply. The same notice lowers the threshold for its HKD 120 insufficient-balance handling charge from fifteen failed transactions in a calendar month to ten. That charge is applied once in the month when the threshold is reached.

Strengths

  • Saved payees and free local FPS payments
  • No account-maintenance fee or opening deposit
  • Card locking is available in the app

Watch out for

  • SWIFT can attract charges from other banks as well as ZA
  • Repeated insufficient-balance failures trigger a monthly charge

Best for

  • Eligible customers handling Hong Kong payments by phone
  • People comparing local FPS with overseas transfer routes
