What it does
Bank Zero serves South African individuals and businesses through its mobile app. It separates delegated payment preparation from final authorisation and supports shared account information. Monthly account fees and ordinary electronic payments are free, with charges for cash and selected services.
A staff member can prepare a payment while an authorised person retains the final decision. Bank Zero’s relationship tools separate those roles, and business approval chains can have several levels. Households and savings clubs can also share account information with chosen people.
Transaction history can be exported to Excel from the app. Spreadsheet extracts are free regardless of how far back they go, while downloading a statement older than three months costs R10 per statement. The FAQ hub links separate guides for exports, payment tracking, business authorisation chains and Xero connections.
What the zero fee covers
The 2026 tariff applies to personal and business accounts alike. Monthly account fees, ordinary EFT payments, debit orders and card purchases have no transaction charge. Cash withdrawals cost R10 per R1,000 block at an ATM or R2.50 at a participating retailer’s till. A debit card costs R83 for Clicks collection or R125 for delivery to a street address, with another R30 outside metro areas.
Immediate payments to other banks have separate charges. Card purchases in foreign currency carry a 1.8% markup, and inactive cheque accounts can incur R5 monthly after six months, taken only from a positive balance.
Registration uses a South African mobile number, accepted South African ID and facial verification in the app. Keep proof of address ready for identification checks. If a document is rejected, open Who Am I → My FICA Documents and use the message beneath the failed document to resubmit it. Children under 16 join through a parent or legal guardian’s invitation and need their own mobile number.
Strengths
- Payment preparation can be delegated while final authorisation remains separate.
- Spreadsheet transaction extracts are free even when the history is older than three months.
- The app provides a specific route to correct rejected identification documents.
Watch out for
- Banking depends on the mobile app rather than a branch or desktop service.
- Cash access, immediate interbank payments and older statement downloads can cost extra.
Best for
- South African households or savings clubs sharing account information
- Businesses separating payment preparation from approval
