What it does
Beasts of England publishes an original font catalog including Archie Brackett, Cleric, Friend and Carnaby Street. It also accepts custom type inquiries.
Beasts of England pairs individual display faces with stories and personal references. Archie Brackett's page, for example, includes size and spacing controls, a sample PDF and a licence selector. The collection is useful for finding a particular voice for a cover or label, with trials, student licences and webfonts for most designs available by enquiry.
For client work, distinguish the Design Licence used in pre-production from the Company Licence needed for the client's publishing use. Only Desktop and Web-font purchases deliver font files; other licences are extensions that require Desktop coverage. The webfont licence is a one-time fee for one website within a monthly page-view allowance. Desktop publishing has a yearly printed-unit limit, and a logo needs additional coverage.
The product selector uses user-count labels, while the current EULA bases company publishing rights on total company size. Confirm the intended client coverage with the foundry before ordering, particularly when the work spans print, branding and paid advertising.
Strengths
- The catalog offers distinct display designs rather than only variants of one family.
- Requested trials and custom type work support a project-specific selection process.
Watch out for
- Licence add-ons do not supply font files and require Desktop coverage.
- The product’s user-count labels need reconciling with the EULA’s company-size terms.
- Webfonts for most designs are available by request.
Best for
- Display-led identities
- Editorial covers and labels with a specific typographic voice
