What it does
Bforartists is a free, open-source Blender fork focused on a graphical, discoverable interface. It changes menus, keymaps, tool shelves and workspace defaults while retaining the underlying 3D toolset.
Bforartists retains Blender's modelling, sculpting, animation and rendering engine while reorganizing its interface around visible tools. Coloured icons, customizable tool shelves, expanded tooltips and workspace defaults give visual artists another way to find operations. It also supplies materials, models, HDRIs and node groups for starting a scene.
Existing .blend files can be opened, and most Blender add-ons can be used. Keymaps and interface layouts differ, so a tutorial's shortcut or panel position may need translating. On Mac, a dedicated Bforartists-macOS keymap provides Command-key shortcuts.
The software is free under GPLv3 for personal, educational and commercial work, with no account or subscription required. The licence covers the program rather than the artwork you create. Stable downloads cover Windows, macOS and Linux; the Intel Mac build is marked experimental. Files saved in version 5.2 may not open fully in Blender or Bforartists 4.4 and earlier, which matters when exchanging projects with older installations.
Strengths
- Icons and tool shelves make operations easier to locate visually.
- Existing Blender files and most add-ons can be reused.
- Commercial artwork can be made without an account or subscription.
Watch out for
- Shortcut and panel differences affect Blender tutorial instructions.
- Newer files may lose compatibility with older Blender-based releases.
- The current Intel Mac build is experimental.
Best for
- Visual artists who prefer exposed graphical tools
- Blender users seeking different interface defaults
