What it does
BIMsmith provides free product research and assembly tools for building professionals. Market compares manufacturer data, while Forge combines layers into wall, floor, ceiling and roof systems for Revit. Generated assemblies are accessed through a free MyBIMsmith account, with an optional Revit plug-in.
Forge starts with one of four system types: wall, floor, ceiling or roof. Choose a starter system or browse by manufacturer and technical criteria such as fire or acoustic ratings. Each layer has category, type, manufacturer and product choices, including generic alternatives. The material browser adds finish, colour and texture selections.
Add or duplicate layers and inspect the resulting assembly in the visualizer. Name the system, then click Build to create a ZIP containing the Revit assembly. MyBIMsmith provides the generated RVT project and optional supporting documents. Open that project in Revit, copy the system and paste it into the destination project.
Market handles the earlier product-comparison stage. Search terms can include technical details, and filters cover project-region availability, certifications and material samples. Select the Compare boxes and Go To Compare for side-by-side data. Participating products have a Build On Forge route; that integration is not available for every item.
The free Revit plug-in brings family search, direct loading and the four assembly configurators into Revit. The licence permits creating manufacturer-product assemblies and downloading authorized information for the design process. Users retain their own data and created output, while the software remains licensed and manufacturer content questions belong with the relevant supplier. Users are responsible for checking input and output accuracy.
Strengths
- Layer controls combine generic and manufacturer products in one assembly.
- The generated RVT project gives a documented route into a working Revit file.
- Market comparison and the Revit plug-in complement the cloud configurator.
Watch out for
- Forge covers wall, floor, ceiling and roof systems rather than every building-system type.
- Only participating Market products offer Build On Forge integration.
Best for
- Revit users building layered construction assemblies
- Design teams comparing manufacturer products and supporting documents
