What it does
Biodiversity Heritage Library digitises natural-history literature and its illustrations. Volume information connects a page image to its book, contributing institution and copyright status.
Open Show Info in the book viewer to inspect the volume’s rights information. Public-domain scans remain public domain; in-copyright works may carry a Creative Commons noncommercial share-alike licence. Commercial permission for copyrighted material comes from the rights holder or holding institution, not BHL.
For all high-resolution page images, choose Download Contents, then Download Book and JP2. The same option appears in Volume Details. These JPEG 2000 files provide the library’s highest available page resolution and can be substantially larger than a screen preview.
For a single JPG, BHL documents a page-image address using the page’s numeric ID. Selected pages can also be assembled into a PDF, while whole-book downloads preserve the surrounding publication. Keep the title and plate or page number with an extracted illustration so its scientific context remains traceable.
Strengths
- Volume information identifies the publication, institution and rights status.
- Downloads include individual JPGs and high-resolution whole-book page images.
Watch out for
- BHL cannot grant commercial permission for another rights holder’s copyrighted work.
Best for
- Researchers and designers sourcing historic natural-history illustrations
