What it does

Bird Email is the email delivery product incorporating SparkPost's sending engine. It offers transactional email, campaigns, templates, sending-domain management and delivery information through its email platform and API.

For an order-confirmation integration, distinguish an accepted API request from the later delivery result. Bird returns a message ID that you can use to check progress, and its delivery events include bounce information. Server delivery also differs from inbox placement: a receiving server accepting a message does not prove where it appears in a person's mailbox.

Create an account, then open Platform tools > API keys in the dashboard. Copy the new key when it is shown; the full value is displayed only once. Bird's first-email guide uses its shared onboarding domain and a sandbox recipient, so you can check the request and event handling before configuring your own domain. Verify your own sending domain before emailing customers. Incoming mail through another provider requires the separate forwarding setup described in Bird's email installation guide.

A Free account can send 1,000 emails each month, subject to a daily ceiling of 50, and stops at its allowance. Paid plans work through a monthly deposit into your Bird balance. Sending is charged from the first email.

Plan Monthly deposit, USD Charge per 1,000 emails, USD
Startup $15 $0.40
Growth $250 $0.45
Scale, displayed option $1,000 $0.35

The balance can pay for other Bird products, and unused funds carry forward. Published send estimates assume the whole deposit goes to email before tax; they are not included email allowances. Growth and Scale also permit dedicated IP add-ons.

Strengths

  • Bounce investigation includes the receiving server's response
  • The same email product supports transactional and marketing sending

Watch out for

  • The Free plan's daily cap can limit a busy day even below its monthly allowance
  • Spending the shared balance on another Bird product leaves less available for email

Best for

  • Application and email teams connecting delivery events to message operations
