What it does
bitFlyer Japan offers cryptocurrency purchases, recurring buys and the more detailed Lightning trading interface. Personal spot accounts are for Japan residents aged 18 or over. Opening and maintaining an account is free, but buy/sell spreads and transaction-specific charges still apply.
Buy/Sell and Lightning price trades differently
Buy/Sell has no separate transaction fee, but its price includes a spread. Lightning Spot uses volume-based execution fees, ranging from 0.15% at the lowest 30-day volume tier to 0.01% at the highest. Yen withdrawals also cost money: the fee depends on the receiving bank and whether the amount is below JPY 30,000.
The Japan service supports recurring purchases daily, weekly or monthly. Lending, staking and crypto CFD products are separate services with additional conditions; loaned crypto generally cannot be sold or withdrawn during its lending term.
Opening a Japan account
- Select Create an Account, register an email address and create a password.
- Enable two-factor authentication, then enter personal details matching the ID document.
- Complete Quick ID or in-person verification.
- Register a bank account in your own name for yen deposits.
Applicants must reside in Japan and be at least 18. The Japanese account rules should not be applied to the separate European or US services. A scheduled purchase still exposes the holding to crypto price losses.
Strengths
- Daily, weekly and monthly recurring-buy schedules
- Buy/Sell pricing distinguishes a spread from a separate trading fee
Watch out for
- Japan residency and identity verification are required for this service
- Yen withdrawals incur bank-dependent charges
Best for
- Japan residents comparing simple yen purchases with Lightning Spot
