What it does

Bitstamp by Robinhood provides crypto trading for individuals and institutions. Institutional software can connect through programming interfaces, or APIs. A phased European retail change also makes the account provider and access method relevant to existing customers.

European retail access is changing

From 15 October 2026, selected EEA and Swiss retail customers of Bitstamp Europe are being invited to connect their existing accounts to the Robinhood app. The first group has until 14 November. Its old Bitstamp interface then becomes read-only, retaining history and statements, while supported trading moves to the Robinhood interface.

This does not require transferring funds: the account and assets remain with Bitstamp Europe. Follow the direct instructions for your invitation group. Profile → My information identifies your account provider.

Institutional and corporate clients are outside this retail transition and continue with their existing Bitstamp interfaces.

Connections for institutional orders

Bitstamp supports direct REST, WebSocket and FIX 4.4 connections. It also documents links with CoinRoutes, Talos and Wyden for firms already using an order and execution management system. The CoinRoutes integration covers Bitstamp spot and derivatives markets.

For custom integrations, the API reference distinguishes public prices and order books from authenticated balances, orders and transaction history. Order functions include status, replacement and cancellation, helping software follow an instruction after submission. Deposit records can also require originator or counterparty details, so funding reconciliation may involve more than storing a wallet address.

Mobile access and registration

The Bitstamp app combines Basic and Pro modes. Basic concentrates on quick purchases and account holdings, while Pro adds charts and more detailed order entry. These are modes within one app, rather than separate accounts. Customers invited into the European transition should follow the newer access notice for their account.

Bitstamp's account guide requires registration, identification and residence verification before trading. Account creation itself is free; that does not establish a free trading allowance. Review the fee schedule and the payment or order confirmation for the actual transaction route.

Strengths

  • Institutional clients can use direct APIs or connected order-management platforms
  • The Bitstamp app combines Basic and Pro views within one application

Watch out for

  • Invited European retail users face a deadline after which their old interface becomes read-only

Best for

  • Existing Bitstamp customers checking their access route and firms comparing institutional connections
