What it does

Bookshare provides accessible ebooks to members whose visual, physical or learning impairments make conventional print difficult to use.

Start with the eligibility guidance rather than choosing a reading device first. Bookshare requires a qualifying print disability verified by an appropriate professional, and it also accepts reciprocal proof from services such as NLS and Learning Ally. An IEP or 504 plan is not required. This makes it a useful route for a reader who needs an alternative format but does not have that particular school paperwork.

Fees and title rights also depend on location. Qualified US students can join at no cost; other US individuals generally pay annually. Outside the US, fees follow the service’s country-income categories. Global publisher permissions and Marrakesh Treaty rights determine which titles are available, so overseas membership does not imply the entire US catalogue.
