What it does
Bretagne presents original type projects including Chantier, Self Modern, Scenery, Kernevel and Cucina. Its catalog explains design references and collaborators, with paid releases, fonts available by enquiry and the free Happy Times project.
Read the project accounts when a typeface’s visual origins matter to an editorial brief. Self Modern began with Japanese Mincho references and was designed to sit beside Japanese characters of similar size and weight. That describes a pairing intention, not a Japanese character set. Scenery changes its ornamental detail across weights, while Chantier includes an open Constructed variation.
Each family has its own access route. Scenery and Kernevel link to Formagari; Scenery’s page provides trials, a PDF specimen and a purchase selector for company size, uses and styles. Other fonts and trials are available by contacting the address on Bretagne’s page.
Happy Times at the IKOB is explicitly free and open source, with a download route through Velvetyne. Its terms do not apply to the rest of the catalog. Bretagne is especially useful for understanding these families before following the relevant distributor or enquiry route.
