What it does
Buildkite Pipelines orchestrates CI/CD workflows from pipeline definitions and agents. A team can run agents on its own infrastructure to control build environments, or use Buildkite-managed hosted agents. The service fits teams that need flexible runners and explicit pipeline steps for build, test, and deployment work.
Describe the work in pipeline YAML as ordered steps, then connect agents that execute those jobs. The architecture guide distinguishes the Buildkite control plane from agents that run on your infrastructure; hosted agents are another option when you do not want to maintain runners. A small pipeline might install dependencies, run tests, and publish an artifact, with each step kept explicit so logs and failures map to a particular stage of work.
The Free plan lists up to five users and ten concurrent jobs. Pro is priced per active user, while hosted-agent time can add per-minute charges. Self-hosting removes that particular hosted execution choice but leaves agent installation and capacity management with your team. Organization permissions also deserve a check: Teams are available on any plan but require an organization administrator to enable them.
Strengths
- Supports self-hosted and hosted agent execution choices.
- Pipeline steps are defined explicitly in YAML.
- The Free plan includes a small team and concurrent-job allowance.
Watch out for
- Self-hosted agents require the team to maintain build infrastructure.
- Hosted-agent use can add per-minute charges.
- Organization-level item access may be broader until an administrator enables Teams and configures permissions.
Best for
- Teams that need custom build environments or agents on private infrastructure
- Running explicit multi-step CI pipelines with a choice of hosted or self-hosted workers
