What it does

Buxfer combines personal account tracking, category budgets and forecasts. It offers nested tags, file imports and multicurrency account tracking, with custom rules on Pro and API access on Prime. Paid plans support bank connections, while the public demo can be explored without signing in.

Buxfer's tags and sub-tags suit a question that spans ordinary categories, such as how much a particular trip cost across food and transport. Rules can rename imported descriptions and apply tags so repeated merchants do not need the same cleanup each time.

Make the rules precise

Create a rule from Rules → Add Rule, or expand an existing transaction and choose Add Rule. Matching options include contains, starts with, equals and wildcard patterns. Matching ignores letter case. Choosing an exact match rather than a broad fragment can keep unrelated merchants out of a rule.

Statements can be uploaded in formats including OFX, QFX, QIF, Excel and CSV. The forecast draws on pending transactions, reminders, budgets and savings interest. Tag a reminder with its associated budget category to avoid counting the same commitment twice. Treat the result as a model of those entries and assumptions.
