What it does

Capital One’s 360 Checking account has no monthly fee, minimum balance or overdraft fee. Customers can manage money online or in the app, use debit-card controls and visit available branches or Cafés. Existing Discover banking customers continue through Discover’s website and app until notified otherwise.

360 Checking combines everyday payments with controls for handling problems. Real-time alerts flag activity, and the debit card can be locked or unlocked. Mobile cheque deposits, bill payments and transfers cover routine banking; the location search shows available ATMs, branches and Cafés.

There is no monthly account fee or minimum balance. Some additional services cost money: an outgoing domestic wire is $30, and a cashier’s check costs $10 at a Capital One location or $20 when ordered online with expedited delivery. The first 50-cheque book is free; later orders are chargeable.

Applicants must be at least 18 and a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. They need a physical address in the 50 states or Washington, D.C., or a qualifying military address, plus a U.S. mobile number and an SSN or ITIN. Electronic communications are required. A linked external account must be with a U.S.-chartered bank.

Overdraft choices

Auto-Decline generally refuses transactions that would overdraw the account. Free Savings Transfer instead uses funds from linked savings or money-market balances. No-Fee Overdraft is subject to eligibility and transaction approval, so a fee-free label does not promise that every payment will be covered.

Existing Discover banking customers

Discover merged into Capital One in May 2025. Its current instructions tell existing banking customers to keep using the Discover website and app until contacted about changes. That is the relevant service route for an existing Discover account during the transition.

Strengths

  • Combines mobile deposits with debit-card locks and activity alerts.
  • Offers different overdraft handling choices without an overdraft fee.

Watch out for

  • Wires, cashier’s checks and additional cheque books can cost extra.
  • No-Fee Overdraft depends on eligibility and approval of individual payments.

Best for

  • Eligible U.S. adults who want digital checking and occasional local service
  • Existing Discover customers looking for their current account-management route
