What it does
Carbon Independent provides a household footprint calculator with energy, fuel, driving and other consumption inputs.
Carbon Independent's form estimates a person's annual footprint from household energy, food, driving and travel. Enter actual meter/bill data where available and set household occupancy, including a fractional number for part-year residents. The form uses kWh for electricity, several gas-meter units, litres for oil and kg for solid fuels. Its car method uses imperial gallons of 4.546 litres and a 14.3 kg CO2-per-gallon factor that includes upstream fuel and vehicle-production allowances, rather than tailpipe emissions alone. Defaults cite the 2019/20 Which? car guide, and the calculator form is dated March 2020 even though the car-method page was updated in January 2026. Weekly public transport is annualised over 48 weeks, and a return flight counts as one trip. Print the chart with the assumptions: its UK average includes other greenhouse gases, while non-UK comparisons use CO2 only.
Strengths
- Input fields allow actual energy and mileage data
- Calculation factors and notes are visible
Watch out for
- Some vehicle defaults cite older source data
Best for
- Inspecting assumptions behind a household emissions estimate
