What it does
cgbookcase provides free PBR texture sets and tutorials for using them. Its material guides explain map roles and setup differences, including normal-map orientation.
cgbookcase pairs free PBR texture sets with practical material-building guides. Its library includes scanned rocks, manhole-cover decals and other surfaces, while the Blender guide explains how the individual maps become a shader.
For a basic material, connect base colour to the Principled BSDF's colour input and roughness to its roughness input. Roughness and other data maps use Non-Color Data. Normal maps pass through a Normal Map node; cgbookcase's DirectX convention requires the green channel to be inverted for Blender's OpenGL convention. That is a concrete compatibility step when surface detail appears reversed.
The guide also covers leaf opacity, translucency and different front/back textures, plus fingerprints and water droplets. Most of its basic setup applies to Cycles and Eevee, with displacement treated separately. The textures are free for any purpose without restrictions. Patron support adds convenient access to a Google Drive folder containing the collection.
Strengths
- Map-by-map explanations make shader connections explicit.
- Leaf and surface-imperfection examples go beyond a basic colour texture.
- Textures are available for any purpose without a fee.
Watch out for
- The supplied DirectX normal convention needs conversion in Blender.
Best for
- Artists learning PBR shader setup
- Blender users building textured surfaces
