What it does
changedetection.io watches web pages for content changes and can notify a team when selected text, page elements, or product availability changes. It supports browser steps for pages that need interaction, and exposes an API for managing watches, history, and notifications. The project can be self-hosted; the vendor also offers a hosted subscription.
Watch the change, not just the response code
A first watch can be a release-notes page, a policy page, or a product listing where the content matters more than whether the server returns HTTP 200. Add the URL, choose the content or element to compare, set a notification destination, and inspect the saved snapshots and differences. For a page that requires interaction, the documented browser-step feature can handle actions before the content check.
An illustrative example, not tested: watch a software changelog for a new version heading and send a notification when that heading changes. The official API can also create and manage watches and notification destinations, but the API key should remain private.
The hosted subscription is listed at $8.99 per month for up to 5,000 URL watches. The self-hosted project is available under Apache-2.0, so infrastructure and maintenance are separate costs. That split is important when comparing the hosted price with a self-managed deployment.
Strengths
- Tracks page-content changes and can filter monitoring to selected page elements.
- Supports browser steps for pages that need user-like interactions before checking content.
- The API can manage watches, snapshots, tags, and notification destinations.
Watch out for
- The signal is a page-content difference, not a substitute for uptime or end-to-end application checks.
- Dynamic or access-controlled pages may need browser configuration and can require more maintenance than a plain URL watch.
Best for
- Developers and operations teams tracking release notes, documentation, policy changes, or availability changes on external web pages.
