What it does

Checkly provides synthetic monitoring and testing for URLs, APIs, and browser workflows. Its CLI can add checks to an existing project and deploy them as Monitoring as Code, while a URL monitor can validate an HTTP endpoint from selected locations. Teams use it to detect failures from outside the service and receive alerts before a user reports the problem.

A useful first check is a URL monitor for a public endpoint. Configure the target, response validation, schedule, and locations, then deploy the monitor. Checkly’s quickstart also documents a CLI-based setup that keeps checks beside application code, so changes to monitoring can be reviewed with the project rather than maintained only in a separate dashboard.

The free Hobby plan lists ten uptime monitors with a two-minute minimum frequency. A synthetic check can show that an endpoint failed from a location or response assertion, but it does not identify the root cause by itself. Pair it with logs and traces when the alert needs a diagnosis, and choose check frequency based on how quickly you need to know about an outage.

Strengths

  • The quickstart documents a CLI workflow for checks stored with project code.
  • URL monitors can validate availability and performance from selected locations.
  • The Hobby plan includes ten monitors with a two-minute minimum frequency.

Watch out for

  • Synthetic checks detect a failed response but do not identify the cause without other telemetry.
  • Check frequency and monitor count are limited by the selected plan.

Best for

  • Monitoring public websites and API endpoints from outside the service
  • Keeping synthetic checks versioned alongside an application
