What it does

Chime is a financial technology company whose banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank or Stride Bank. Its app combines checking, account activity and optional saving routines for eligible US adults. Savings requires a Chime Checking Account and has no monthly fee.

Small purchases, payday and a fixed calendar schedule can each feed Chime Savings. The three optional routines suit different ways of setting money aside:

  • Round Ups moves a card purchase’s difference to the next whole dollar into savings. A $14.40 purchase would set aside $0.60, provided the source account has enough money.
  • Direct Deposit Allocation sends a chosen share of an eligible deposit to savings.
  • Recurring Transfers moves an amount weekly, every two weeks or monthly.

To enable purchase roundups, open Savings > Autosave > Round Ups, turn the option on, choose the general savings balance or a savings goal, then save. Autosave also gathers the other saving settings, making it the place to review routines that are moving money automatically.

Recurring transfers have another entry point under Move > Manage recurring transfers. Choose the schedule, source and destination accounts, and amount before reviewing and confirming it.

Costs outside the monthly account fee

Checking has no monthly service fee, minimum balance or opening-deposit requirement. Out-of-network ATM withdrawals and over-the-counter withdrawals cost $2.50. Instant transfers from Chime to an outside debit card cost 1.75%; the published Bancorp agreement limits this route to $2,000 monthly, with a $25 minimum transfer.

Account opening requires US residence, age 18 or older, a valid SSN and government-issued photo identification. Chime supplies the app and customer interface; the banking agreement identifies the partner bank providing the account.
