What it does

CiviCRM connects nonprofit contacts with contributions, memberships, events, communication and reports. It can run on its own or alongside a supported website CMS. The core is free to download and use; hosting providers and the managed Spark offering have separate arrangements.

CiviCRM's relationship record is a constituent, such as a donor, member or event participant. A community association can keep membership, contribution and event activity with the same person, then use that history for the next renewal or conversation.

Choose how it runs

The current download recommends Standalone for new installations. It does not require a separate CMS. Packages also remain available for WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and Backdrop when the CRM needs to sit beside an existing site. Select the package for that environment and follow its installation guide.

The core is free to download, use and share. Running it still requires a host. Organizations that want a provider to operate the system can use a listed hosting provider or explore Spark, whose managed access is a separate offer.

Strengths

  • Constituent relationships connect with membership and contribution activity
  • New installations can use the standalone application without a CMS

Watch out for

  • Operating a downloaded installation requires hosting and maintenance

Best for

  • Nonprofit and civic organizations managing continuing constituent relationships
