What it does
Microsoft Clarity provides free session recordings, heatmaps and AI-assisted behavior analysis for websites and mobile apps. Heatmaps show clicks and scrolling, while recordings and Highlights help locate the interactions behind a pattern. The service has no traffic limit.
Clarity pairs a page-level view with individual sessions. A click or scroll heatmap can reveal an overlooked action; recordings and Highlights show the sequence around it. AI summaries and chat offer another way to explore trends, and heatmaps can compare behavior across page versions.
For a website, sign up, create a project and open Settings > Setup. Choose a supported platform integration, an NPM installation or Get tracking code for manual setup. The manual script goes in the website’s head section. Once data arrives, open Recordings or Heatmaps to investigate the page. Mobile apps use the separate SDK, with Android, iOS, Flutter and React Native support.
The ongoing service is free without a traffic-based upgrade. There are practical boundaries: Clarity cannot capture the inside of canvas elements or third-party iframes, and Microsoft says it should not be used on sites or apps aimed at under-18s. Configure masking and the appropriate consent signals during setup. Without cookie consent, affected visits can become separate page sessions, limiting continuous-journey analysis.
Strengths
- Recordings, Highlights and heatmaps provide complementary views of interaction
- The ongoing service is free with no traffic limit
- Setup supports common website platforms and a separate mobile SDK
Watch out for
- Canvas content and third-party iframe content are not captured
- Not intended for sites or apps targeting people under 18
- Missing cookie consent can fragment a visit into separate page sessions
Best for
- Teams investigating behavior on a live website or app
