What it does
ClearCheckbook combines a personal transaction register, account reconciliation, budgets, bill tracking and reports on the web, iOS and Android. Manual tracking and basic budgets are free. Paid memberships add bank syncing or the broader Premium tools, including forecast balances and automatic backups.
A spending limit can belong to an account or a category, with a reset period chosen for the budget. Open Budgets and use + Budget to set the amount, account or category, duration and reset day. Rollover can carry an unused amount into the next period. Transfers are excluded by default, with an option to include them.
Reconcile the record before relying on the balance
Assign each purchase to its account and category, then mark the entries that appear on your bank statement as Cleared. ClearCheckbook shows cleared and total balances separately. The Bill Tracker follows paid, upcoming and overdue bills; recurring transactions instead post on their due dates unless entered early. Premium adds future-balance estimates and a zero-out reconciliation method using a statement's ending balance.
A free membership is enough for manual records and basic budgets. These are the main web membership choices:
| Membership | Price | Main scope |
|---|---|---|
| Free | No charge | Manual register and basic budgets |
| Sync | $2.49 per month | Bank downloads from up to five institutions |
| Premium | $5 per month or $52 per year | Bank downloads from five institutions plus advanced budgets, reports and backups |
Several accounts at the same institution count as one connection. Combining Sync and Premium raises the allowance to ten institutions. Use the Supported Banks search before choosing syncing for a particular bank.
Premium can match uploaded QIF, OFX, QFX or CSV statements against the register. Creating a login requires a unique username and email address.
Strengths
- Premium can send nightly CSV backups to Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive.
- Premium budget histories can be exported as CSV.
Watch out for
- Bank downloads require a paid Sync or Premium membership.
- Budget history, advanced budget types and forecast balances require Premium.
- Each paid membership alone supports five financial institutions.
Best for
- People reconciling a personal register while monitoring bills and spending limits
- Households choosing between manual entry and bank downloads
